About
Live the experience and expect the unexpected: next to jewels of the past the Turicum Quartet never stops exploring new paths. Echoes from the east, sounds from space, miscellaneous moods of composers. Four individual voices from four different countries. A rich diversity forming a vibrant unity. Resonating for a long time after the last chord.
2023 the Turicum Quartet became second prizewinner of the Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition. Highly acclaimed, their performance was worldwide livestreamed by Medici TV and they appeared in The Strad and on The Violin Channel.
The string quartet was founded in 2021 at the Zurich University of the Arts. Already some months later it was awarded a Kiwanis Music Prize. Highlights since then include their debut in Tonhalle Zurich, performing back at NOSPR in Katowice (Poland) and concerts at the Mizmorim Festival with the renowned Gringolts Quartet.
Summer 2024 the Turicum Quartet was Quartet in Residence at the Ticino Musica Festival, also performing with Ivan Podyomov, principal oboist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The current season includes concerts in Switzerland, Germany, the UK, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Norway as well as recordings for the Belgian radio and tv.
The Turicum Quartet performs old masters and modern composers side by side. Their programs include music by Toshio Hosokawa, Victor Alexandru Coltea, Hed Bahack and Amir Liberson, the viola player of the quartet.

Currently they are pursuing a graduate course in Basel with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet) and Silvia Simionescu (Gringolts Quartet). The Turicum Quartet is a fellowship holder of Villa Musica in Germany. They have been selected as ECMA Ensemble (European Chamber Music Academy) and are part of Le Dimore del Quartetto.
The Turicum Quartet is very grateful for the guidance of Ilya Gringolts (Gringolts Quartet), Axel Schacher (ex-Belcea Quartet) and Johannes Meissl (Artis Quartet). They received further musical impulses from Gregor Sigl (Artemis Quartet) and Oliver Wille (Kuss Quartet).
“Turicum” is the ancient roman name of Zurich, the place where the quartet was founded.
